Plannig for photoshoot / Nadav Kander inspired photographs

  • Shadows I think look good reflected on the model. I have been inspired to take a photograph using shadows, it makes it more edgy

  • I think the concept of somebody going insane, would be perfectly represented using this style photograph (ghosting). However I am going to add more dramatic face expressions, to make it look more like the model is crazy.

SETTING - By using the projector it makes the person viewing the photograph think that it was actually taken in the woods, and her looking out into the distance also adds onto that idea. I do believe it was taken in a studio.
COSTUME - There is no costume, as you can see the model is not wearing any clothes that are         visible to us. This could link into the idea of peace and serenity, no clothes could be representing clarity.
EXPRESSION - The model looks very calm in this photograph, and sometimes nature is used to represent peace and serenity which is probably why he chose to use the tree effect, I really like it. I love the concept of it.
LIGHTING - I think a projector was used to reflect the tree shadows onto the model in this photograph.
PROPS - No props were used.

SCELP

SETTING - This photograph was taken against a white background, maybe that was done intentionally to outline the state of isolation as the model in the photograph looks like he is going insane. So this insanity could link into him being isolated, maybe the isolation is resulting in his insanity.
COSTUME - Its very strange how the model is wearing such formal clothing with the expression he has. I realise that business people go under a lot of stress, so it could be because of that.
EXPRESSION - The model looks very confused, although the expression on his face is not easily visible, it easy to make out that he is confused and maybe trying to make a decision and he cant take the stress.
LIGHTING - I'm assuming that artificial lighting was used to take this photograph.
PROPS- No props have been used when taking this photograph.
EXTRAS - The models body language contradicts the emotion his face is expressing, as his body is giving off calm energy whereas his face however gives off the complete opposite.

SETTING - This photograph taken by Nadav Kander was taken in a studio as you can tell from the background. I've noticed that the background colour bounces off the colour of the shirt the model in the photo is wearing, I think that looks cool and using the same colours for the background and the clothing makes the models make up stand out much more because they have such an opposing colour for the makeup.
COSTUME - The model is wearing a suit with a bow tie, I think that is to outline his solemnity as his face supports that characteristic. And even though the paint on his face is defying the idea of the solemnity.
EXPRESSION - The artist looks very determined in this particular photograph, he has the same expression as he did in the first photograph, so this shows that, the photographer, (Nadav Kander) tells his models to keep serious faces on most of the time as I have noticed in a lot of his photographs. In the majority of his portraits the model does not give the photographer direct address, he obviously does this for a particular reason.
LIGHTING - Artificial lighting, I'm guessing was used when this photograph was captured  gets all of his models to put a serious face.
PROPS - The paint that was smeared on his face, stands out well.

Nadav Kander

Nadav Kander is a photographer, artist and a director; who is based in London. Kander is well known for his portraits and landscape photographs. He's even wrote several books of his own, he has also received rewards, he received an honorary fellowship accolade from the Royal Photographic Society. His work is displayed in many museums and galleries, out for people to see, one gallery in particular being National Portrait Gallery, which is in London .

Nadav Kander was born on December 1st 1961 in a part of Israel called, Tel Aviv. When Kander was just 2 years old, his father sadly lost one of his eyes due to medical reasons even though some people had the wrong idea about the cause of it. His father was 37 at the time and struggling to find a job because he had previously been fighting but was unable to due to his missing eye. By 1964 his parents had come to a conclusion and decided to move out of Tel Aviv to South Africa, where his grandfather lived. He pretty much lived there for his whole childhood (18 years) and moved out to England when he was 21 years of age.

On family holidays his dad would take photographs and weeks after returning home, in Johannesburg his dad would treat him and the rest of his family to a slideshow of the amazing photographs he took , this memory stuck with Nadav, he says that this was his introduction into the possibilities of becoming a photographer.

After his Bar Mitvah at the age of 13, Nadav used the money he was given as a gift to purchase his own Pentax camera. Around this age , he began to look closely at the work of; Strand, Stielglitz, Weston and Atget. Looking at all of these made him reach a realisation that each artist was exploring their respective lives. These artists based their off of their outer and  inner surroundings and they still managed to add uniqueness to each piece of work. The type of work they produced and the pictures they captured made him realise that there is no out of bounds, that you can incorporate anything into your photographs. I think their work inspired him and gave him a base idea.
When Nadav was 17 , he was drafted into e Air Force and he worked in darkroom where he printed aerial pictures for 2 years! This was the time, Nadav became sure he wanted to become a lens artist.

After he left the Air Force, he began to work for Harry De Zitter.
to conclude, he married a woman called Nicole, they bought a flat in England and settlesd down and had 3 kids.
